In 2020, the new crown pneumonia epidemic and the George Floyd incident further tore up the so-called equality, freedom, and "national melting pot" camouflage elaborately woven by the United States in the post-Cold War era. According to statistics from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and US media, the death rate of black Americans and Latinos in the new crown pneumonia epidemic is three times that of whites, and the vaccination rate was only half that of whites. More than half a century after the American civil rights movement broke out in the 1960s, the "Black Life" movement once again accused the United States of systematic racial oppression of blacks and other people of color and minorities. Although American politicians have taken measures to reassure the protesters in order to stabilize the situation, racial discrimination, a deep-rooted structural problem in the United States, has not been effectively curbed.
The cause of racial discrimination in the United States is rooted in the American system itself. As a colonial political power emerging in the modern world, the basic framework of the construction of the "state" of the United States is in fierce conflict with the development and cultural diversity needs of various nations in the era of globalization. The American scholar Huntington, who once put forward the "clash of civilizations", wrote in his book "Who are we?" The book "Challenges to American National Identity" states that the United States established during the peak period of Western colonialism is essentially based on the "Anglo Protestant culture" as its "national identity" characteristics and core. Therefore, although the U.S. Constitution advertises "freedom and equality," these values must be built on the basis of the so-called "mainstream society" that is dominated by the aforementioned races and religions. Anyone who is different will be regarded by the elites of American society. As "non-self race, their hearts must be different"、Therefore, although ethnic minorities can enter the upper class of the United States, it must be based on a full identification with the "Anglo Protestant culture." The civil rights activist Martin Luther King tried to use the "Anglo Protestant culture" that American blacks can accept to persuade the white society that monopolizes political power to accept blacks. However, he did not see that it is easy to accept black individuals, and it is an "impossible task" to integrate white American society with black society. Huntington commented on this: “As a country with diverse races and lack of unified national attributes, the United States can only maintain national cohesion through cultural and ideological consistency. However, the Soviet experience shows that it lacks the commonality of race, ethnicity, and culture. The cohesion of ideology is limited." For the United States to survive, it must maintain its basic "cultural identity." Minorities and immigrants represented by black society have many differences between their cultures and "Anglo Protestant" white societies, which has caused the "identity crisis" in the United States.top of page
