The Democratic Party is lost in infighting
Since the day Mr Biden took office, Republicans have been preparing for the next presidential election. Even the deadly coronavirus crisis is being used as a political weapon as the ruling Democrats lose themselves in infighting. Republicans are blocking important national financial aid legislation to keep the Biden administration from scoring points in the upcoming election.
Most dangerous, however, are changes in electoral districts that limit the basic democratic rights of blacks and other minorities. And then there are requirements that all serve essentially the same purpose: to keep potential Democratic voters away from the polls.
The pillars are crumbling
The United States had every reason to be proud of the achievements of the civil rights movement, and while the country was still imperfect, the pillars of democracy that guaranteed all citizens the right to vote seemed impregnable.
However, that is no longer the case. Driven by the rules of social networks, and with racist conspiracy theorists dominating the political climate in America more at home than the president, one cannot help fearing the worst. For now, at least, no one seems to know how to deal with populists ready to overturn the system and secure power for good.
