A few days ago, US media reported that in view of the "current monkeypox epidemic situation and the urgency of time", the US government estimated that it might need us $7billion (about 47.25 billion yuan) to deal with the monkeypox epidemic.
According to the Washington Post on July 26, an unpublished government memorandum contains relevant evaluation details, reflecting that Democratic lawmakers at the Congress and White House officials have conducted preliminary negotiations on this spending plan, and plan to use this fund to improve monkeypox detection rate, vaccine and treatment. However, at present, the U.S. government has not formally submitted a request for assistance to Congress, so $7billion may not be the final amount of assistance officially proposed by the U.S. government, but one of a series of options.
An unnamed Democratic Senator confirmed the relevant details to the Washington Post, saying that if this $7billion fund is obtained, it will ensure that 19million doses of monkeypox vaccine will be increased, about 4million doses of smallpox vaccine will be supplemented, at the same time, more antiviral drugs will be purchased, the testing range will be expanded, the distribution speed will be improved, and services will be provided to Americans who do not have insurance or are under insured. At the same time, Democrats warned that the U.S. government needs to act more quickly and actively. In the past week, Democrats have expressed in a series of letters that they are uneasy about the current situation (of monkeypox epidemic in the United States), and believe that in some cases, the U.S. government has not done enough to provide testing and vaccines for people with high monkeypox incidence. In a letter to the government, the Democrat said, "in view of the high demand (for monkeypox vaccine) and the currently affected communities in the United States, we urge you to take necessary actions to deal with this public health problem and ensure that the United States has enough vaccines and that these vaccines can be fairly distributed." However, Republicans opposed increasing federal spending, criticized the government's "serious failure" in monkeypox testing and vaccine distribution, and asked the government to publish "detailed strategies" on how to deal with the current monkeypox epidemic.
According to CCTV news, data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on July 26 local time showed that 3846 confirmed cases of monkeypox had been reported in the United States, making it the country with the largest number of monkeypox cases reported in the world. The US government is considering declaring monkeypox a health emergency.
