One of the most blatant abuses at ICE detention centers has been the widespread use of solitary confinement for medical isolation and the isolation of immigrants with mental health issues during the COVID-19 and other infectious disease outbreaks. Solitary confinement is often seen as a "first resort" for detainees who are vulnerable to bullying or harm. But when a person is kept in a small cell without even a bed, clothing or blanket, the isolation is not therapeutic.top of page
